Als bedrijf wordt u voortdurend geconfronteerd met nieuwe uitdagingen. Zeker in het buitenland kan u voor ethische dilemma’s komen te staan: milieuvraagstukken (bedrijfsafval, energiebesparing, transportkeuzes, …) en sociale kwesties (veiligheid en gezondheid, kinderarbeid, andere waarden en normen, …).
Idealiter gaat u bewust om met die dilemma’s en worden economische, sociale en milieuoverwegingen een integraal onderdeel van uw bedrijfsvoering. Zorg dragen voor uw bedrijf is zorg dragen voor uw personeel en uw omgeving.
In Vlaanderen spreekt men meestal van ‘Maatschappelijk Verantwoord Ondernemen’ (MVO), maar ook ‘Duurzaam Ondernemen’ wordt vaak gebruikt.
Internationaal is de meest gangbare term ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’. In de Verenigde Staten en Angelsaksische landen wordt ook ‘Corporate Citizenship’ gebruikt, maar Europeanen associëren dit meer met filantropische initiatieven van bedrijven (denk bijvoorbeeld aan de Bill Gates Foundation). Dit zogenaamd ‘Community Involvement’ is maar een klein onderdeel van de vele verantwoordelijkheden van een onderneming en behelst dus maar een klein gedeelte van Maatschappelijk Verantwoord Ondernemen.
Maatschappelijk Verantwoord Ondernemen (MVO) is een proces waarbij ondernemingen vrijwillig streven naar verbetering op bedrijfs- en maatschappelijk vlak door op systematische wijze economische, milieu- en sociale overwegingen op een geïntegreerde en coherente manier in de gehele bedrijfsvoering op te nemen, waarbij overleg met stakeholders of belanghebbenden van de onderneming deel uitmaakt van dit proces." - Referentiekader MVO in België (2006)

1. Duurzame Ontwikkeling: Beleid & initiatieven in de wereld, Vlaanderen, België en Europa
Sinds de goedkeuring van de Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) of de Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelstellingen op de Algemene Vergadering van september 2015, zijn deze de belangrijkste referentiebron en het inspiratiekader voor het verduurzamen van internationaal ondernemen.
De Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelstellingen zijn universeel en gelden voor alle landen in de wereld. In paragraaf 67 van de resolutie worden ook ondernemingen gevraagd om hun creativiteit en innoverend vermogen aan te spreken om de uitdagingen inzake duurzame ontwikkeling het hoofd te bieden.

2. Maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen
ISO 26000, Guidance on Social Responsibility
ISO 26000 is een internationale richtlijn voor MVO. De richtlijn heet officieel 'Guidance on Social Responsibility'. ISO 26000 helpt organisaties hun maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheden te bepalen en geeft adviezen over de verankering van MVO binnen organisaties. Ook probeert ISO 26000 een uniform MVO-begrippenkader te introduceren.

De MVO Risico Checker geeft inzicht in mogelijke risico's in landen waarnaar u exporteert, waar u zelf produceert of vanwaar u producten of diensten invoert. Via een gratis online tool maakt u zelf een MVO-risicoanalyse en krijgt u concrete tips om de risico’s te beperken. Zowel handig voor u als voor uw handelsrelaties. Deze tool is ook in het Engels beschikbaar: CSR Risk Check.
Carrots & Sticks bevat een databank van verplichte en vrijwillige instrumenten die organisaties verplichten of aanmoedigen om informatie over duurzaamheid te rapporteren. De gegevens hebben betrekking op instrumenten in 64 landen en zijn verzameld tijdens onderzoek voor de 2020-editie van het Carrots & Sticks-rapport. Dit bouwt voort op gegevens die zijn verzameld sinds 2006, toen de Carrots & Sticks-reeks werd opgezet.

4. Duurzaamheidsverslaggeving
In een duurzaamheidsverslag communiceert een bedrijf publiekelijk over haar economische, milieu- en sociale prestaties. De meest gebruikte rapportagekaders voor duurzaamheidsverslaggeving zijn deze van het ‘Global Reporting Initiative’ (GRI), de ‘Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’ (SASB) en de 'International Integrated Reporting Council' (IIRC). Global Compact heeft een rapportagesysteem, de zgn. COP.
